Hunstanton Lawn Tennis Tournament 2020 – cancelled

Edited 03/05/20 08:25

It is with great disappointment and sadness that the Hunstanton Lawn Tennis Tournament committee has reluctantly taken the decision to cancel this year’s event due to take place Sunday, August 16 to Saturday, August 22, 2020.

The decision has not been taken lightly, but the health and well-being of everyone involved – competitors and their families, caterers, sponsors and stallholders – and that of the residents of Hunstanton and the surrounding villages is the Tournament committee’s top priority.

The committee has been closely monitoring the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and has placed regular updates on the website based on advice and information issued by the UK Government and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

The LTA has now cancelled all LTA staged and LTA approved competitions (grade 1 to 6) up to Sunday, June 28, 2020. Following consultation with Seniors Tennis G.B. the LTA has also decided to cancel the LTA Seniors County Cup (40s to 75s Age Groups) for 2020. Many players in that competition are considered, by the LTA, to be within the Covid-19 high risk category. That age group also comprises a significant proportion of the Hunstanton Lawn Tennis Tournament entry along with the many spectators and players’ supporters.

Additionally, the Tournament committee remains conscious that many players entering the event and their families, rent accommodation for the ‘Sunny Hunny’ week. Many property owners, as well as bed and breakfast proprietors and other accommodation providers have ‘number of days’ cancellation clauses. As a result, the maximum amount of cancellation notice provided limits the cost exposure.

Furthermore, the Tournament committee is clearly aware of social distancing requirements. The fact that on some days during Tournament week, approaching 4,000 people – in addition to more than 1,200 players – could be on the Recreation Ground site would make social distancing extremely difficult, if not impossible, to manage.

It is against that background, and considering all the facts and available information, that the Tournament committee has taken the decision to cancel the 2020 Tournament, which would have also been a celebration of the event’s 100 years. Entry fees for those players that have already entered will be automatically refunded over the coming days.

The Tournament committee would like to take this opportunity to say that we hope that you and your families are safe and well at this difficult time.

We are already looking forward to the 2021 Tournament, which will take place Sunday, August 15 to Saturday, August 21. It will include a celebration of the event’s centenary and we hope you, your family and friends will return to ‘Sunny Hunny’ 2021 for what will be a fantastic event and together we can make the unique Hunstanton Lawn Tennis Tournament bigger, better and stronger. See you then.
